More info:: Alison is a variant of the French name Aalis, which is a variant of the name Adelais, which is a shortened version of the Germanic name Adalheidis. Adalheidis is comprised of the Germanic elements "adal" meaning noble and "heid" meaning kind.

Alison used as a form of endearment for Aalis in the Middle Ages. It eventually evolved into a given name in its own right, being regularly used in France and England during Medieval Times. It eventually fell out of favor before being revived in the early 20th-century.
