Burns derives from the Old English word "burna" or "burne" (spring, stream).

Burns is also a shortened from of the German name Bernstein used in English-speaking countries. Bernstein describes amber, but derives from the Middle High German words "bernen" (to burn) and "sten" (stone), because they thought amber was burnt stone, but is actually fossilized pine resin.
