More info:

Eleanor is an Old French variant of the Provençal name Aliénor, which is a variant of the Germanic name Aenor, which has no known meaning. It may be related to the Greek name Helene, whose meaning is also disputed, or to the Latin word lenire, meaning "to soften." It may also be derived from the Greek word eleos, meaning "pity."

Eleanor came into use in England as a variant of Aliénor, via Aliénor (Eleanor) of Acquitaine, who was the wife of queen King Louis VII of France and King Henry II of England. Eléanor was also used in the langues d'oïl of Northern France.

Famous bearers include former U.S. First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt.

Eleanor Rigby is the title of a fictional character in the Beatles song of the same name.

Eleanor was very popular between 1910-1940 and has recently been making a comeback, re-entering the top 200 in the US in 2010.
