In the Old Testament of the Bible, Jesse is the father of King David.

Jesse first appeared in naming records as early as 1880, and reached its peak in popularity in 1981, when 10,438 boys received the name. It has since declined in usage, with only 2,940 boys being given the name in 2011.

Famous bearers include American outlaw Jesse James and American athlete Jesse Owens (born James Cleveland Owens).
