Leila is a variant of the Persian name Layla, which means "night" in Arabic. Layla was a popular literary character in Persia and Arabia from the 7th century poems of Quays. The 7th century poet would later influence the rise of this name in English speaking countries when it inspired the song "Layla" by Derek and the Dominos in the 1970s.

This spelling of Leila was used by Lord Byron in both "The Giaour" and "Don Juan".
