More info:

Louis is a variant of the name Clovis, which is a French variant of the name Ludovicus, which is a Latinized variant of the Germanic name Hluodowig, which is comprised of the elements hluod "famous" and wig "war, strife."

Louis was the name of 18 kings of France from the 8th to 18th centuries, including King Louis XIV, or Louis the Great. It was introduced by the Normans to the English-speaking world in the 11th-century, although it was quickly replaced by the spelling Lewis and the pronunciation LOO iss. The spelling Louis would be revived in the latter half of the 19th-century, often spelled phonetically as Louie, and would eventually surpass Lewis in popularity.
