Samuel is an English variant of the Hebrew name Shemu'el, meaning "god has heard" or "name of god."

In the Old Testament, Samuel was the son of Hannah and Elkanah who would go on to become the last of the ancient Hebrew judges and the first major prophet in the Kingdom of Israel. He is the main figure in the two Books of Samuel, and would anoint Saul and David as the first two kings of the Kingdom of Israel.

It first came into use in the English-speaking word in the 17th-century.

Famous bearers include American writer Samuel Clemens, who wrote under the pen name Mark Twain, American statesman Samuel Adams, and American inventor Samuel Morse.
