More info:

Sophia is a Greek name meaning "wisdom."

Individuals who demonstrated wisdom in various early Greek religious texts were referred to as "Sophia figures." Sophia was also the name of an early Italian saint venerated as a martyr. The name of the Hagia Sophia ("Holy Wisdom") in Istanbul, Turkey has at times been erroneously attributed to this saint, when in fact it derived its name from the Greek word.

Sophia was used extensively among European royalty in the Medieval Ages and was first used in the English-speaking world in the 17th-century. Its popularity grew when Sophia of the German House of Hanover became the heir to the British throne in the early 18th-century. She was the mother of King George I.

Famous bearers include Italian actress Sophia Loren, English actress Sophia Myles, and American actress Sophia Bush.
